Artwork title : Recomposition #05
What geometries underlie the natural and the built environments? What traces of the past do they contain?
In New York City BAUHAUS: Oculus series, I recompose details of the architecture of the landmark building created by Santiago Calatrava at the World Trade Center Hub. My images show geometrical forms reminiscent of the BAUHAUS style.
In Recomposition #05, I saw Oculus not only as an architectural building or a modification of the urban space, reflecting the technology and the understanding of humanity at any time, but also as spatiotemporal phenomena that are to be aesthetically and formally appreciated in their own right and as the basis of the creation of intriguing images that have value beyond the reference. What kind of buildings do we want to live in?
Created in Germany in 1919, the BAUHAUS could be seen as antipodal to Santiago Calatrava's style inspired by Antonio Gaudí and Art Nouveau. New York City BAUHAUS: Oculus thus stipulates a connection through basic geometries, which is all but obvious. However, my exploration of the abstract geometries of the building finds a counter-point in the documentation of the building's human side, looking at its multiple functions when it acts as a transportation hub, contemplation space, memorial, selfie spot, performance, and meeting place.
