Artwork title : Homage to Manzoni
Homage to Manzoni refers to the white kaolin paintings of Piero Manzoni. When I saw them I thought, Ah, it's drapery in art through the ages, how brilliant.
For a long time, I have worked on a series of oil paintings related to nature that use images of trees as subject matter. I took photographs on which I have based many of these paintings, and one of the trees I photographed had been the site of a piece by Andy Goldsworthy. The piece looked like a bird's nest surrounding the base of the tree. The tree was very peculiar, and was near where I often walked in Central Park in New York. One day, I saw that the tree was being cut down. I was devastated, because I loved that tree. Later, I went to the site and took a few leaves. One of the leaves is covered in white gesso and attached to a piece of paper twenty-two by thirty inches. It is an all-white piece, and its folds are like Manzoni's paintings.
