A monumental tree trunk rises through the frame against an uneasy olive-toned sky. Its dark mass is both unmistakably organic and strangely architectural: a central axis around which the surrounding space appears to tighten.

Rather than presenting the tree as a comforting emblem of nature, Marcel van Beek gives it a commanding, almost confrontational presence. The restrained palette strips the landscape of familiar seasonal cues, while the severe vertical composition heightens the tension between endurance and threat.

The work moves between portrait and landscape, monument and apparition. What stands before us is recognisable yet difficult to place, as though the natural world had adopted the authority of a built structure. In this unsettling transformation, the photograph questions the human expectation that nature should offer reassurance. Its stillness is not peaceful; it is charged with a sense of watching, waiting and withheld meaning.
