Artwork title : Now You See It
Narrow-gauge railway tracks lead into dense woodland, drawing the eye towards a small, elusive switch mechanism. A practical route becomes a passage into uncertainty. The forest closes around the rails, its layered vegetation offering just enough structure to promise orientation while withholding any clear destination.
Marcel van Beek stages an encounter between human systems of direction and a natural world that resists being reduced to a map. The faint suggestion of a choice at the end of the tracks gives the image a psychological charge: is the viewer being guided, warned or invited further in?
The work recalls the threshold landscapes of Romanticism but denies their reassuring promise of refuge. Its carefully organised perspective turns looking into an act of hesitation. What initially seems visible gradually becomes less certain, and the apparently silent forest acquires the unsettling presence of something that may be looking back.
