Artwork title : Not A Pipe
Not a Pipe explores representation, perception, and the erosion of truth in a time increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence and disinformation. Blurring the boundaries between painting and sculpture, the work reflects a world where truth is no longer passively observed but actively constructed.
The title Not a Pipe references René Magritte’s The Treachery of Images, drawing attention to the gap between representation and reality. Within the text are layered references, including the word “truth” rendered in over fifty languages. This multiplicity emphasizes how personal and collective truths are shaped by subjective perception, cultural context, and lived experience. Each perspective contributes to a shared yet fractured understanding of reality.
The concrete substrate serves as a foundation, symbolizing the structural and ideological underpinnings of modern society. Its imperfections and surface disruptions suggest gradual destabilization, hinting at the fragility of systems once perceived as stable. Resting on this foundation are white, metamorphic forms made from sculpted acrylic skins shaped to resemble sheets of newsprint. These forms extend beyond the concrete’s boundaries, suggesting the expansion and distortion of information as it moves through contemporary culture.
The text embedded within the sculpted surfaces was generated through prompts examining artificial intelligence, disinformation, and the manipulation of truth. Presented in a format reminiscent of traditional newspapers, the content invokes familiarity and authority while complicating the relationship between appearance and authenticity.
Through the interplay of text, texture, and form, Not a Pipe reflects a landscape shaped by deepfakes, synthetic media, and persuasive fictions. Truth becomes something sculpted, shifting, and negotiated.
As Magritte’s painting challenges our understanding of representation, Not a Pipe invites viewers to consider how expanding boundaries and evolving technologies are reshaping truth and its foundations in contemporary society.
