Ink on paper - 94 x 118 cm
My work is based on signs. Throughout the years I have gathered a collection of signs that I was attracted to. I call it "my alphabet". The origin of these signs come from old alphabets (Chinese, African, Mesopotamian, self created). I have then redesigned these old signs to my own taste.
My practice is strongly influenced by calligraphy, although it was art that brought me to calligraphy more than calligraphy that brought me to art. For me calligraphy was a necessary passage point in order to have a "means" allowing me to represent what I was trying to express. However I wouldn’t describe what I do as calligraphy.
Using Indian Ink on paper, I then assemble these signs in order to make ‘a construction’. Sometimes I make a light sketch with a pencil on the sheet of paper, sometimes all I have before starting is a mental picture of what I want to achieve. As I am drawing with my Chinese brush, I then react to my own features in order to try to build a coherent construction. I consider that more than 60% of what I produce is not good enough and therefore destroyed.
The final result is an assembly of signs and colors to which I then add a title. I then leaves the whole construction to the imagination of the art lover who will decide, or not, to take possession of it and then construct, or not, his own fiction.
