The surface of the buildings keeps changing. After the Corona-Pandemic, tenants, unable to pay the rent, have to leave the building. And then a new signboard is set for a new tenant because of prohibited gathering and rules of physical distancing by the government. It's not entirely because of the pandemic but makes it worse. If I visit the place in the photograph again, I could recognize the change immediately. Some signboards have gone, some others are new.
On the face of it, these signboards are very kitsch. They are a symbol of fierce competition in S. Korea. It is very colorful, complicated, noticeable. But if you always use bright colors, nobody will be conspicuous.
Most Korean don’t like the building because they think that Signboards remind them of the chaotic history of S. Korean economic development. The S. Korean government declared that it would take all possible measures to improve that as well. It is a specific feature of S.Korean society if the government focuses its attention on any field, the situation would change dramatically under the new legislation. It is easy to speculate that Signboards might be removed. I have to take a picture of them before it disappears.
On the other hand, I can notice some positive desire of the owners of it. They want to get attention for promoting their livelihood so that they use bright colors and bolder fonts. In my opinion, it is rather dynamic and gorgeous, not the type of conclusion commonly associated with a tragedic developing history of Korea. The Life of S. Korean who work hard and seek a better life for themselves and their family is implicit in the Signboards. At the beginning of this project, I agreed with our government. But I changed my mind. I will contend that it is beautiful.
