"Flight Cage" was initially conceived as part of a kinetic installation. My vision is to have a series of hand-tipped rib cages suspended from the gallery ceiling, each slowly arching and flapping, like birds, floating above the viewers' heads. This is a fixed prototype for the series. I am reminded of how Leonardo DaVinci was transfixed with the idea of flight, his myriad inventions to allow man to soar above the earth, so many of which replicated bird skeletons and anatomy. This work is representative of my practice in that it focuses on the figure of man, but through an imaginative and scientific lens. I aim for my work to not just replicate form, but to imbue it with humor, and observe it with a scientific eye.
