Silicone Rubber

117 x 36 x 20

"Knot" is as heavy as it looks. Made of solid silicone rubber, it was borne of the incredible overwhelming frustration and sense of helplessness I have felt in the current political environment: trapped, bound, tied in a knot. Arms and hands convey so much meaning... tied in a knot they exude inertia, confusion, paralysis. Considering the title "Knot" and its homonym "Not" underscores the challenge, the impediment, of an abstract problem. Previous to the recent U.S. election, my work was rarely political. But now I find that I must use my voice. Aside from its conceptual genesis, however, I feel that its enigmatic weightiness can be translated otherwise, allowing it to reinvent itself according to the viewer’s own experiential connection, and as such becomes universal, transcending a single interpretation.
