Artwork title : PULL!

PULL! is an imperative and demands action. The delicately embroidered command, featured prominently in this small artwork, is chosen with care: it evokes obedience, followed by curiosity, and ultimately by intrigue. What sets PULL! apart is the enigmatic cord emerging through a discreet hole in the frame. This cord holds the key to a captivating experience, well, for those who dare to pull it.

The beauty of the works in the Read! series lies in the unexpected. When a viewer decides to tug the cord, they set in motion a transformation that is at once mesmerising and unsettling. The meticulously embroidered word on paper, begins to unravel before one’s eyes, as if challenging the very essence of permanence in art. The act of unravelling becomes a performance in itself, blending the tangible and the ephemeral, the tactile and the temporal.

As the threads release their hold, the viewer is left with a profound sense of wonder, both uplifting and uneasy. Engaging with the cord, or choosing not to, becomes a symbolic journey, mirroring our curiosity and revealing the consequences of our actions. It challenges us about the nature of art, urging us to consider whether it is acceptable to alter or even participate in the gradual destruction of a piece. Is what is (left) truly art, or has it become an illusion, a memory of what once was?

In these ‘interactive needlecraft artworks’, the simple act of pulling becomes a potent metaphor for the human instinct to seek meaning, to explore the unknown, and to question our understanding of creativity, the boundaries between reality and illusion. PULL! invites to engage not only with the artwork itself, but also with our own instincts and preconceptions, an experience, as thought-provoking as it is unforgettable.

In our world of art, these pieces remind us that art is never static; it is a continuous dialogue, a never-ending invitation to question, challenge, and reinvent. When we choose to pull the cord, we unravel our perception of art, while exposing the boundless possibilities of human imagination.
