Artwork title : Falling from grace
size: 133 cm X 77 cm
technique: Relief outliners, glass and oil-based paints on mirror
I use a technique of relief outliners and glass paints on mirrors to create geometric abstractions. The use of vibrant colors and different textures that vary from opaque to transparent, allows multiple perspectives.
There is a delicate balance between concealment and revelation that allows parts of the person standing in front of it to be revealed through the exposed mirror or reflective colors.
Seeing oneself and surroundings through a mirror deconstructed by the painted shapes, is meant to explore the act of perception, and the complex relations between our sense of self and our mirrored image.
This piece has subtle angelic references (in the color scheme as well as the shapes and frame). The abstract geometric shapes are moving both up and down simultaneously, mirroring how reality is more complicated than heaven or hell. We are constantly moving, not necessarily in a straight linear line.
The name, "Falling From Grace", describes metaphorically a hard and sad disillusioned experience, that if understood in a certain way - might not be a bad thing in itself: Stopping the pursuit of perfection is acknowledging our humanity. We can only strive to do our best, and that is never perfect. Neither people nor works of art are perfect, rather they are uniquely imperfect and fragile.
