Nothing conveys better the futility of pleasure and the transient nature of life as a children’s birthday party ; the modern day vanitas. Cake and balloons with their impermanence, shiny and tight for a fleeting moment, deflated and drooping the next.

On the other hand, there is nothing as life-affirming and celebratory. The blowing of the candles ( the flames symbolizing the number of years passed ) the chanting and applause, rainbow-colored presents, flashy decorations, party hats and whistles, have a ritualistic nature. We are, after all, still prone to rites and ritual. It is the way we deal with the old world concept of the Life - Death - Life cycle, it is part of our unconscious imagery.
