Artwork title : Anxiety

This work aims to express a constant anxiety of contemporary people; intellectual anxiety, appearance anxiety, success anxiety, emotional anxiety, etc. Its difficult for people to relax in life, we always car about the scrutiny of others, submerges in other’s comments. These anxieties are unspeakable, they settle in, people feel powerless but want to break free. The work is based on a somber tone of heavy colors, with the eyes surrounding representing “scrutiny” from others comments and conversations represents the lips. The genderless head represents all groups of people, men, women, young and old. Blue is also the way of expressing sadness. The eyes without eyeballs represents the feeling of being hollowed out, being suffocated under all the pressure. The two hands represents all the pressure and anxiety with a sense of numbness, the sewn mouth is to express our sense of powerlessness, difficulty to speak up for ourselves, difficult to contend. I used to feel from my classmates and the teachers discussions, I have stood on stage to feel from the lights, the audience, the judges, parents and peer’s comments and discussions. But who knew, - I was anxious.
