Artwork title : ∞ Femicide ∞
Call it by its name.
The term “Femicide” does not downgrade the female nature from the human (homo “man” – homicide) nature. Patriarchy does.
The “Femicide” painting was created in the 17-officially-reported-femicides Greece of 2021, days after the tragic story of a couple in Glyka Nera, Greece was unveiled. The man, acknowledgeably referred to as “pilot” from the Greek media, murdered his wife Caroline and orchestrated a malicious plan to cover up his crime. The truth was eventually revealed, without however preventing other men from committing the same crime afterwards.
On the left side of “Femicide”, one can see Caroline holding her newborn baby, and the silhouettes of other nymphs, murdered women, dressed in white in the form of an angelic reference. Blurry reflected, they stand there to remind, something that Caroline assures by holding a scroll with their names written.
On the right side, one can see the “pilot”, surrounded by men that committed femicides as well. The demonic nature of them is highlighted, either in the form of their figures, or by the “pilot” himself who seems to take young Caroline’s breath away, i.e. the cause of her death.
My intention was to showcase reality through the unreal. The way things really are and the way things really feel. The unveiling of the true nature of the “pilot”, who ironically and stereotypically honors society’s standards for the male figure · the revelation of the true monster in him.
