Artwork title : Alcestis at the Kitchen's Table

The image is part of an ongoing project: Another Weeping Woman (about the ridiculous ache of desire). It is a narrative project that investigates the realms of human behavior through the eyes of four different women. Part of an ongoing investigation that seeks to challenge a consistent and dominant narrative of female irrationality that permeates our visual and written culture, the project focuses on four specific characters which are heroines depicted in Euripides’ Greek Tragedy: Medea, Alcestis, Phaedra and Helen. As the title suggests, each of these characters faces reality through ways of pain, in Euripides’ tragedy the female role is being analysed and depicted as troubledand evil, nevertheless transgressive femininity is profoundly celebrated. The text of the four tragedies has been analysed and deeply influenced the production of the project in terms of symbolism and narrative sequence. The images are a personal interpretation of the tragic characters as a collective of carefully staged self-portraits, whose aesthetics have been informed by the literary evidence, taken in a range of locations that includes Italy, Spain, Scotland and Florida.
