Artwork title : Will Amnesia Get You Too?
Will Amnesia Get You Too? is an auto-ethnographic interactive installation that reflects upon the social and familiar ramifications of age-related amnesia. Developed through inter-generational research, the work explores personal experiences of amnesia and invokes a conversation on memory in the context of human over-reliance on digital communication devices including smartphones and social media apps. The narration in both Italian and English represents both the personal and social aspect of the story. I used both languages as I wanted to represent my being Italian and the story of my family and then English as it is the language used worldwide, thus representing society. On the one hand, this story has it's focus on my great aunt, who's affected by Alzheimer's disease causing her memories to fade and reinvent themselves. On the other hand, on myself and the younger generations who over rely on technologies. The piece aims to leave the participants wondering about this question: If we are training our memory less, are we fading away? This project is a social portrait of different generations to reflect on who we are and the traces we'll leave.
This installation is interactive as it asks the participants to take a photo of themselves, drawing attention on the culture of the selfie in nowadays society. The participant will then be part of the journey of the narration and as the story unfolds, the participant, only at the very end, through the application of their photo onto a 3D model of a body, will realise that has been present in the story the entire time by observing the main character loosing her memory and documenting it with a phone.
This interactive experience is aimed to be experienced individually, using a pair of headphones to hear the stereo sounds and the narration that guides them through the visual journey of the story, observing the environment unravelling on a wide screen in front of them and be surprised by their participation in the story, as this is the turning point of the piece.
