Artwork title : Cracked life, but not broken
Cracked life, but not broken, 2022, encaustic and oil on plywood, 30 x 24 cm
This painting belongs to my recent Echoes of the Past series, which was inspired by exhibits showcased in the Korgialeneios Cutural and Historical Museum of Cephalonia Island, Greece. I created 19 contemporary wax paintings, by working with the ancient encaustic technique, which focused on a direct dialogue between the past and the present. The artwork's title Cracked life, but not broken is metaphorical and refers to the fragility of human nature. That is why I chose the pistol to represent threat and the fragile porcelain soup tureen to stand for the human body and mind. Life's unpredictable twists and turns can crack and bring down a person from the weight of catastrophe and hardships. Yet, the admirable human willpower and the self-preservation instinct to stand up again keeps their fighting spirit alive.
