17 century Netherlands, a lot of paintings with women sitting in the interior and reading for example letters from their husbands who are outside in the world or you see them doing their female duties in marriage. Even if there is no person at all we find in the interior female attributes as codes like women’s shoes. Exactly what we don’t see are the men, maybe as a postman or in an active role. The absence of men should wonder us how moral standards in pictures influenced and influence still our society, what we show and what we don’t show gives importance to the message and demonstrate how easily we can adapt morality and rules without questioning the reason of their origin.
