Artwork title : OGENUS VII
I have been working on a series of artworks related to human and social causes.
This artistic creation follows a project I participated in with artists from around the world, led by Doug Bailey from the University of San Francisco. It was based on the use of artifacts found in archaeological excavations in the city of San Francisco, which were considered Ineligible, that is, useless, buried trash on the shores of the ocean. The challenge was to base ourselves on the artifacts that were given to us, and with them create works of art that would raise awareness of an important social cause around the world.
In my case, I named my project OGENUS, and it is somehow related to nature, water, seas and oceans, and the protection of heritage.
The artwork OGENUS VII is based on an inland lake landscape in the São Domingos Mines, in Portugal. A sublime and tragic landscape of abandonment, red with fire, from the mines that surround it. It evokes the isolation of rural populations and the little attention given to nature, the environment, and historical, cultural, and natural heritage.
