Artwork title : The Unpunishable Woman

I am a figurative artist currently based in Rome. Working in oil, I explore the female gaze and reclamation of the body. My heritage as a Chinese American shaped my understanding of femininity through both cultural expectation and resistance, with women in my family often moving against tradition —leaving home, pursuing artistic lives, and defining themselves on their own terms. Living in Copenhagen and now Rome has expanded that perspective and exposed me to more outward expressions of autonomy and selfhood. I now define and express my idea of femininity through brushstroke. My process involves layering and revision, juxtaposing richly painted, realistic forms alongside intentional, unresolved underpaintings. This contrast mirrors the interplay between being seen and resisting the male gaze. Rather than concealing, I allow traces of process to remain as a quiet refusal of polish and control. My work responds to the persistent critique placed on the female body and aims to challenge and dismantle harmful lens placed on women as devilish objects. I intend for my bodies to take up space, reclaim their narrative and portray the feminine in all its glory.
