WAI HOI YAU Hong Kong Painting

Artwork title : Melody of Initial Aspiration

I believe that it is difficult for one to make a living merely with artistic creation in any country or region, especially in Hong Kong. Although Hong Kong is the largest art market in Asia, the trade in artistic works of Hong Kong artists is rarely seen in large-scale exhibitions in Hong Kong.

This work, created in a surrealist style, expresses the powerlessness of a painter in Hong Kong, who still believes in miracle out of his love for art, especially painting.

I am like the young man in the painting, playing a broken violin without strings (implying that I am painting) to create silent melody that people cannot hear without true feelings. I hope my performance can make people deeply touched. Maybe this kind of performance will only attract passing kittens or pigeons and no one will stop to enjoy it because people can't hear it at all. While I was playing, I can’t see anyone.

I still insist on playing on the stairs next to the overpass, my exclusive stage, and the sun shines on me like a spotlight on the stage. I am enclosed by the fence, making it impossible for me to leave. I could clearly see an art avenue in front of me, and the billboards of the top three art exhibitions in the world (La Biennale di Venezia, Sao Paulo Art Biennial and Kassel Documenta) to the direction of the Sotheby's and Christie's, but I just couldn't jump over the fence, and all I could do is stand where I am and play the violin silently. I hope the pigeons in the distance will hear my music and bring hope to me. At this moment, I can do nothing but stand on this broken staircase and silently play this "Melody of Initial Aspiration". Can you hear this melody?
