Artwork title : All we ever wanted was everything
Water mixable oil paint on canvas; 100 x 150 cm; 2021
I depict the encounter between two or more individuals, in orer to talk about intimacy and the personal growth these entail. These moments of real life are captured by photographs I shoot myself in people's houses. I then cropt the pictures to create narratives about familiarity, inclusivity, and self-acceptance. One scenario becomes eventually an extensive allusion to talk about the extraordinary connection that takes place in intimate moments.
Following on from the classical idea of the naked body, my work strives to redeem the symbolic element of the representation of the body. I want to restore a poetic relationship with the body - where it is looked upon as something not necessarily sexual, but as a unifying commonality between us all.
The multiple moments within the skin's texture become central to the representation. The minutiae of the body and the little irregularities given by the underlying gesso priming, interact with each other to confer uniqueness to the portrait. Next to the priming there are overlapped layers of thin organic oil paint, used to intensify the transparency of the skin.
