Artwork title : Portrait of Roger Penrose
Roger Penrose like his father was a British mathemetician. He developed a friendship with Escher due to a common interest in tesselation. He discovered the Penrose Triangle an impossible shape which led to a common interest between the three. Escher utilised the Penrose Tringle in a few works, Belvedere, Waterfall and Ascending and Descending. Similarlt it had been used here in the steps in the foreground.
