Artwork title : Onyechimelueze arrives at Met Ball

My inspiration for this piece came from my favorite of my mother's laces. First of all, she cherishes her native Nigerian attires, especially her laces, so much that she keeps them separate from her everyday clothes. She only wears them on special occasions. In retrospect, this is my favorite not only because it's her most expensive outfit, but because of the eloquent nature of the design. The design tells her story. It was definately made for her. When I admire it, I see sophistication, meticulousness, and beyond all the embodiment of elegance. These are my mother's main attributes. When you look at first glance the pattern seems so chaotic, but as you pay attention you see the precise journey of the disks. This reminds me of my mother's remarkable resillience. Futhermore, with such a lace, I wondered what style of outfit I could draw it into to fully show the pattern and I happened on Rihanna's past met gala outfit. The occasion, outfit, and person was a justifiable muse. I drew everything from scratch with pastels, colored pencils and watercolors. I used a picture of my mother looking in that direction. The only thing left was to find a gracefull hairstyle to adorn my mother with, hence this hairstyle came about from the arabic salon orient from instagram.
