Artwork title : Modern painless

This artwork depicts pain in modern times, with reference to wide-spread public dependence on social media. Different mediums including pastels, pens and markers were used for this work.

On the left, the man of the sculpture—whose image was selected as an homage to Auguste Rodin’s “The Thinker”—is seen pondering of the reasons why he is receiving negative comments and feedback on social media, and of potential solutions for this problem. The pink background highlights his strong struggles, while the color purple has been juxtaposed to symbolize unsolvable mysteries and questions behind this social media phenomenon.

The right panel then illustrates the scene after the man of the sculpture resolves this issue. His bust consists only of his head down to his shoulders, and he is heavily bleeding because he has sacrificed the rest of his body in order to receive positive comments from other users on social media. The mint background contrasts with the pink color from the left panel to highlight the man’s achievement of positive comments. Yet there is an irony between the background and the sculpture in that the man was only able to arrive at such positive outcome after losing a great part of himself.

The lesson conveyed by this artwork is “Do not struggle with negative comments by other people. People post negative comments not because you are wrong or incorrect, but you are different. You do not need to go as far as losing yourself in order to receive positive comments.”
