Artwork title : Staring at the sun
Artist: SQUARCIA Artwork: "Staring at the sun", Mamiano, Parma, Italy, 1998, painted steel, 10’Wx8’Hx2′ to 5’D This sculpture is a memorial to Luca, the artist’s brother, who was killed by a drunk driver at the age of 16; it was conceived, designed and built only 2 months after Luca’s death. It is a living object (lived, used and completed by people), in movement, in torsion; far from the static, heavy, celebratory, pedestal-mounted traditional monuments, closer in concept to the Vietnam memorial in D.C., it rises directly from the ground, and thrusts itself upward into the wind and to the sky, pointing to the sunset like the bow of a sailing vessel. The un-grinded welds are like permanent scars, the red color is blood, fire and love. A stairway that lets us climb the steps to wonder into the infinite mystery of life, death and beyond.
