Madonna & Child
A contemporary re-visitation of one of the most iconic art subjects, this Madonna and Child sculpture retraces the fundamental traits of the great masters of the middle age and of the renaissance and beyond:
The elongated neck, the angles of inclination of the faces, the direct intense reciprocal stare between mother and newborn, the embrace of the mother to the child as if the two persons are still one – the mystery and gift of life, and the natural and innate symbiotic tie between a mother and her child – (the round shape of the wood base recalls the gesture of two arms holding and protecting the baby), the typical elegance of the ornate cloak of the masters’ Madonnas is shown in the subtle texture of the tree trunk’s bark while the exposed portion of wood grain in the front represents the breast and womb; on the top of the wood trunk (the body of the mother from whom the child comes to light) are visible the concentric rings of life, an geometrical feature and a symbolic metaphor of love, harmony, life and grace irradiating from the heart in all directions through time.
