Melanie Moeglich Germany Sculpture

2 Grad (2 degrees), porcelain, teak, polyurethane, 2019/A, approx. H60 x L60 x W60 cm

Porcelain branches stretch up into the air. The shape appears compact, but is translucent.

After almost twenty years of diving break as a former Divemaster, the first dive moved me so deeply that it became the reason for the work 2 Grad. During my past diving experiences we floated along beautiful coral gardens full of colorful floral animals, but this time white skeletons on the reef and sea floor were revealed to us. A deeply destructive sight. Rapidly these sensitive creatures bleach out and die on a large scale all over the world.

2 Grad makes visible the struggle for survival of valuable organisms and living beings, which mostly takes place in silence and in secrecy. Through the firing process the cast and hand-shaped elements become valuable objects of beauty and contemplation - and thus a kind of deception for the viewer.

The submitted work 2 Grad (2019/A), is the largest sculpture of the serial work 2 Grad. There are four objects of different sizes, which can be presented individually or as a group. You can see all objects here:  www.melaniemoeglich.com/2-grad
